Cotton is the seed fiber of the Gossypium plant of the Malvaceae family, native to the subtropics. The plant is shrubby and grows up to 6 meters in height in tropical regions, usually 1 to 2 meters. The flowers are creamy-white, turn deep red shortly after blooming and then wither, leaving behind small green capsules called bolls. There are cottonseeds inside the cotton bolls. The hairs on the cottonseeds grow from the epidermis of the cottonseeds and fill the interior of the cotton bolls. When the cotton bolls mature, they split open to reveal the soft fibers. The fiber is white or white with yellowish, about 2 to 4 cm (0.75~1.5 inches) long, and contains about 87~90% cellulose, 5~8% water, and 4~6% other substances. Countries with the highest cotton production include China, the United States, and India.<\/p>
